'The Telephone' at The Hostry Festival in The Hostry, Norwich Cathedral

7.30pm

Ben loves Lucy or, should we call her, ‘Rockabilly Lucy’, with her total adoration of 1950s style? Will his gift soften her heart, and encourage her to accept his hand in marriage, or remove her from his arms forever?

Menotti’s ‘The Telephone’ or ‘L’amour à trois’ is a gem of operatic comedy, presenting an attempted marriage proposal alongside endless phone interruptions (how very modern!).

This marvelous, bijou opera is followed by a second half of music, featuring composers including Warlock, Barber and Roderick Williams, which traces the journey of myriad conversations and musings on that delightful tyrant, Love.

Featuring the award winning soprano Lisa Cassidy and the stunning baritone, Mark Saberton, this is an evening not to be missed.

The Human Voice is in the first half in English and in the second it returns to it’s original French as La Voix Humaine. Timepiece

Sounds on the hour, every hour.

Beginning with a solo singer at midday, building to a full choir by 9pm and fading back to a single voice at midnight, Timepiece will explore our relationship with time – how it affects and influences us, how we speed it up and slow it down and how music helps us to change our perceptions of it.

This new durational choral piece from the acclaimed Voice Project is specially created and directed by Sian Croose and Jonathan Baker.

Lisa Cassidy is among a supreme line-up of soloists joining the show.

THE VOICE PROJECT- THE ARMS OF SLEEP

Travels in Light will be the final part of a trilogy of pieces about sleep, dreaming and waking (and especially the bits in between) from the Voice Project Choir. The inspiration for the concert came from a quote from the painter Paul Nash (whose work was recently exhibited at The Sainsbury Centre in Norwich) 'The divisions we may hold between the waking world and that of the dream are not there; they are porous; in a word, they are not there'.

The show will be a multi-venue performance piece in three locations on Norwich's medieval Princes Street and the churches with their different acoustic and atmospheric properties: St George's Tombland, St Peter Hungate and the United Reformed Church.

The show is a reflection on the time of the year: the sleep of winter: the dark nights, the short days but awakening with the promise of spring to come. The music has been specially written for the Voice Project Choir.

Tickets £12.50 / Conc. £10 / Children £5
